People in the News: Buffett gets high -- on New York real estate

The Margaritaville Man must be having a midlife crisis. That's the only possible explanation for Jimmy Buffett's purchase of an $11.7 million four-bedroom, 5 1/2-bath condo on the 73rd floor of a New York City skyscraper. What was this perpetual beach boy thinking? Does he hate New York hotels?

The New York Post attributes the buy to "changes in attitude as well as changes in altitude" and notes Ricky Martin will be a neighbor. Buffett also has homes in Palm Beach and New York's Hamptons.

  • The anti-fur folks are continuing to harass Jennifer Lopez. PETA is planning a big protest in Los Angeles at the premiere of "Monster-in-Law" (also starring Jane Fonda) and picketing at the "Tonight" show studios where she's scheduled to appear on April 29.

Nicole Kidman wowed her fans with still another stunning gown as she arrived at a party celebrating the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this week. Kidman stars in Sydney Pollack's film, "The Interpreter" with Sean Penn. The film was shot in and around the United Nations compound in the Big Apple. One critic complained that a lock of hair obscured most of Kidman's face throughout the film.

Now Pamela Anderson has joined the bashing. A New York Post article reports on an Anderson interview with Jane magazine in which she said, "People who wear fur smell like a wet dog and they look fat and gross ... really immature and unenlightened." She accuses furriers of spreading propaganda that fur sales are booming and of giving "free coats to idiots like Jennifer Lopez and Puff Daddy."

  • Just in case you haven't heard, Ben Affleck is engaged to Jennifer Garner. He slipped her a ring last weekend, a $500,000, 4.5-carat diamond ring, which the New York Post notes is about two carats less than the pink diamond Affleck presented to former fiancee J. Lo. Any way you weigh 'em, we're not talking carrots.

  • James Caan is getting another divorce. He filed for divorce this week from Linda Caan, his wife of more than nine years. Well, considering his first marriage lasted only five years, his second one year, and his third five years, we could say he's getting a little better at hanging in there. New York Post reports he's asking the court not to award her support. This is another case we'll probably hear more about.

  • Reese Witherspoon is "the only actress under age 30 to appear in the top five on Hollywood Reporter's list of highest-paid actresses," according to Scripps Howard News Service. She's noted for her work ethic and "the effort and energy she puts into every role."

"Her two most successful and acclaimed films, "Election" and "Legally Blonde," will go down as classics in the comedy genre and she is largely credited with making both of those films sing.

"Even when she's featured in flops, such as 'Legally Blonde 2' and 'Sweet Home Alabama,' she is rarely criticized for bringing down a project. And despite her marketability, she remains true to her art by starring in some films simply for the challenges and opportunities they present." Spare us!

  • Anne Heche the librarian? Get used to it. The Hollywood Reporter says she's going to star in a Hallmark Hall of Fame holiday (as in Christmas '05) special, "Silver Bells."

Heche will play a librarian who "takes a teenage boy under her wing."

  • Adam Sandler will serve as grand marshal at the NASCAR Nextel Cup race on May 1. The Associated Press reports the 38-year-old actor has been given the job of announcing, "Gentlemen, start your engines!"
