June 10, 1999 High and dry on Frenchman Coulee Tucked in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, Frenchman Coulee is a dramatic part of Washington, shaped by lava flows, carved by the Columbia River and gouged by cyclic floods from an ice-age lake in Montana. The coulee's basalt cliffs and basins -- just off Interstate 90 about two hours east of Seattle -- have become one of the Northwest's most popular climbing spots. They also offer Seattle-area residents a drier place to hike, fish and watch birds.
