This Week's Hot CD: Loretta Lynn's 'Van Lear Rose'
Van Lear Rose (Interscope)
The young guns of Nashville dominate today's country music charts, leaving many country legends on the sidelines. Teaming up with Jack White of the White Stripes, beloved, 68-year-old country singer Loretta Lynn has crafted a stirring, heartfelt record that takes her music in a new direction.
It combines her earthy, Kentucky-bred country with acoustic blues and soulful rock. Forty years her junior, the Grammy-winning, roots music-loving Detroit rocker and producer was a kindred spirit in her quest to keep her music real.
"Van Lear Rose" is the 71st album in Lynn's prolific, 44-year career. Lynn wrote all the songs, many of them biographical. Each was recorded in one take, and the results are stunning.
The song "Portland, Oregon" recounts a cheerful round of drinks while on the road. "Miss Being Mrs." is a tender ode to her late husband, "Doo." And "High on a Mountain Top" is a joyous reflection on her childhood. (Gene Stout)
