Seattle Bands: Slender Means

Who: Josh Dawson, vocals, guitar; Sonny Votolato, guitar; Paul Pugliese, bass; David E. Martin, keys; and Eric Wennberg, drums

Formed: Seattle, 2003, though most of the band members have kicked around in other notable bands. Dawson fronted Lightheavyweight and Fields of Mars, while Votolato and Pugliese contributed to the collective Bugs in Amber.

Releases: "Neon and Ruin," the band's debut on Mt. Fuji, was released Tuesday. It was produced by Martin Feveyear (Presidents of the USA, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees) and sparkles like a freshly washed kitchen floor.

Sound: Crisp laments full of delicately interlaced guitars that move at surprisingly jaunty tempos. Think the Smiths or Chameleons U.K. Dawson's accomplished vocals have matured to perfection: He has a way of snagging common 1980s melodies and repurposing them to his own ends. A standout track from "Neon and Ruin," "Molecules," borrows the "whoa-whoa-whoa" chorus of "Like a Virgin" without sounding contrived.

Free downloads: None, but tracks from the record play when you visit the band's Web site at www.slendermeans.com

Next show: CD release party tomorrow at 9 p.m. at the Crocodile with additional performances by the Crystal Skulls and the Seaworthies. Tickets: $8 at Ticketweb.

Quote: What the band is most excited about: Votolato says, "With our past trials as examples, we've brought in a good formula. We have matured musically."
