Recording academy honors Northwest music icons
Jazz musician Julian Priester, rock band The Kingsmen, Seattle label Sub Pop Records and music advocate Kate Becker are recipients of the 2005 Recording Academy Honors Awards.
Formerly called Impact Awards, the honors are presented by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Recording Academy Saturday from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Westin Hotel. The awards recognize those who have enriched the Northwest music scene, as well as the community at large, with their outstanding achievements.
Priester, a nationally renowned trombonist and educator, has performed with Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton. Priester teaches at Cornish College for the Arts.
The Kingsmen, originally based in Portland, are best known for their hit version of "Louie, Louie," a rock 'n' roll classic once considered a candidate for the Washington state song.
Sub Pop Records is the label that launched Nirvana and Soundgarden. The label is still breaking ground with releases by Sleater-Kinney, The Shins and the Postal Service.
Becker has been a dedicated advocate for the all-ages music community.
The event features an awards dinner and performances by Priester and The Kingsmen.
Tickets can be purchased locally at 206-834-1000 or at www.grammy.com/pacificnw.aspx Prices are $95 members, $150 non-members.
