This Week's Hot CD: Bob Dylan's 'Modern Times'

Modern Times (Sony)

Bob Dylan's 44th album, his first in five years, completes the trilogy begun with 1999's "Time Out of Mind." Where 2001's "Love and Theft" was thick with references to '30s and '40s music, "Modern Times" plays like a rock 'n' roll record from the 1950s.

Dylan's lyrical escapades ramble freely through John Lee Hooker riffs and Buddy Holly rhythms. "When the Deal Goes Down" is a waltz equally suitable as a prom's last dance or the closing credits of "Dr. Strangelove." "Workingman's Blues #3" would be a masterpiece, were it not that the hook line is an outrageous steal from Merle Haggard.

Dylan's most original musical stroke comes on "Nettie Moore," on which the bass guitar plays a single note while Dylan sings the bass line. He completes the lovesick journey with "Ain't Talkin," an Elizabethan ballad revolving on a six-syllable blues couplet. (Bill White)
