Music: Samantha Crain's 'The Confiscation'

(Ramseur)

Bob Dylan's harmonica-aided folk merges with Joanna Newsom's fluid narratives and Cat Power's vocal somberness on "The Confiscation," Samantha Crain's five-song "musical novella." Only 21, the Oklahoma Choctaw singer belies her age through ambitious subject matter -- sample song title: "In Smithereens, the Search for Affinity" -- and literate lyrics. And with her stark and vulnerable Americana, Crain, who performs Aug. 4 at The Triple Door, could be a country cousin to Ellensburg's Star Anna. DOWNLOAD: "Beloved, We Have Expired"
