The Pacific Northwest is a tectonic time bomb. The Nisqually Quake that struck Feb. 28, 2001, was a reminder. The 6.8-magnitude temblor caused billions of dollars in damage, and the cleanup still continues today. The quake taught engineers and emergency-management experts many important lessons. They learned about how different types of buildings and different kinds of soil respond when the ground moves, and identified weaknesses in how the region's governments respond in a crisis. As a result, building code changes are likely this year, while public agencies are reviewing their response plans. A year after the Northwest was rattled by the biggest quake it had experienced in more than half a century (see last year's coverage), the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is publishing a series of reports on earthquake risk and preparedness in Washington. | ||||
