Snark Attack

Do you hanker to mark Ralph Nader? An Internet group, votepair.org, is matching voters who favor Nader but fear tossing the election to Bush. It works by swapping a vote for Nader in a state where the Electoral College contest is one-sided -- say, Idaho -- with one for Kerry from a contested state such as Washington. Perhaps the most important effort by the group, however, is promoting true election reform, such as 1-2-3 elections (you pick your favorite, second-best, etc.) In that process no Nader vote would be left behind.

Rep. Tim Sheldon, D-Potlatch, is the state Democratic Party's Zell Miller -- minus the ranting unleashed by Miller at the GOP convention. On Sept. 22, 2003, the then Bush military policy adviser said: "A year from now I'd be surprised if there's not some grand square in Baghdad that is named after President Bush."

-- Thomas Shapley
