Like most arts journalists, my love for music began at a young age under the influence of some phenomenal artists. I was nine years old when I was first introduced to Simba, Timone and Pumba. That’s right, stars of the classic soundtrack "The Lion King." I spent hours standing on my bed, beliting out, "Oh I Just Can’t Wait to be King" in private concerts for my family. Fortunately, they were a honest bunch and I quickly realized that I was not destined to be a musician myself. Nonetheless, music has always been an important part pf my life, and, ocassionally, I still find myself humming the tune to "Hakuna Matata."

Today I am 21 years old and about to enter my senior year at Seattle University. I am studying journalism and work as the Arts and Entertainment and Features Editor for our campus paper, the Spectator. When I’m not in school, you will find me in my home town, West Seattle. There I usually spend my time walking along Alki beach, eating sushi at Moshikos (followed by ice cream at Husky Deli) and hanging out at Easy Street records.

My other loves include cheese, which I’ve tried to dignify with a love of wine, The Seahawks, which I keep undignified by drinking Corona at 8 a.m. before games, and camping. That one needs no justification. I also love to travel and visit my family in the Netherlands.

My musical tastes are hard to nail down. I appreciate anything of quality, no matter what genre it falls under. I hope that through this blog readers and my fellow bloggers will introduce artists to one another and get exposed to new music. So don't be shy! Give me some feedback. Tell me what you think about the artists I mention and lets get a dialogue going.

Shannon Schrecengost is a junior Communications major at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. With an emphasis in print journalism, Shannon's writing interests include (but are not limited to) features and narrative journalism.

When Shannon is not busy commuting from Tacoma to the P-I newsroom, she enjoys movies, music, ultimate frisbee, international travel and the Seattle Seahawks.

Tony Ly is a senior Journalism major at Seattle University. His main interest is sports journalism, a passion ignited in sixth grade, he says, when he watched the ’96 slam dunk contest.

"That got me hooked.

"My first love will always be basketball, but I have acquired a taste for baseball and football after watching SportsCenter every morning before I went to school," he says.

photoWill Johnsen

Will Johnsen came to Seattle four years ago from the Oregon Coast. While attending Seattle University where he is a journalism major, he found his way into the local hip-hop scene. From working with Obese Productions to creating the hip-hop department at Seattle U's radio station, KSUB, he has devoted much of his free time to educating himself about both hip-hop's history and it's roots. This desire to know where the music came from has turned into a rather terrible vinyl buying habit, that if not taken control of may overtake what little space is left in his apartment.

When he's not out diggin' for records he can probably be found at work, producing a country radio show or reading Wax Poetics.
