Where To Draw The Line

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Are the Dallas Cowboys really America's Team? How far does the Seattle Mariners' fan base extend? Is there a physical dividing line between Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels fans?

The CommonCensus Sports Project (www.commoncensus.org/sports.php) is conducting a survey to find out where the fans of major sports teams are located. You go there and enter your street address and select which teams you support (you don't have to register or give your name), and the information is added to the database. Multicolored maps show the geographic breakdowns for MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL and NCAA Division I-A football.

The project launched in September, and with only about 15,000 votes for most of the maps, it's not terribly scientific yet. But the more people vote, the more accurate the maps become.

The survey is an extension of the original CommonCensus project, which was started by a 25-year-old political science major from Yale.
