Burglars rip off ReAct Theatre for the second time

While still trying to recover from a burglary last summer, ReAct Theatre was mauled again by burglars a few weeks ago. In March, ReAct was in residence at the Richard Hugo house on Capitol Hill, producing "The Shape of Things." Between performances the company's storeroom was broken into and robbed of some $1,500 worth of stage equipment.

The summer break-in occurred while ReAct was producing "The Hasty Heart" at the Bathhouse Theatre on Green Lake; $3,000 worth of props, costumes, equipment and supplies disappeared in that incident.

ReAct is a low-budget fringe operation that gives proceeds from its productions to charities and arts organizations. Anyone with information about the company's stolen goods is asked to get in touch with Seattle police about case No. 05-112905.

To contact ReAct, call 206-364-3283 or e-mail react@reacttheatre.org.

Union Garage, a Capitol Hill fringe venue that has been dealing with safety code violations during the past year, has been abandoned by its two permanent companies, Theatre Under the Influence and Theatre Babylon. Both companies are on hiatus.

Also on hiatus is the Mae West Fest, an annual event that for the past eight years has showcased women writers and performers. The fest was a sometime resident of Union Garage. Though concentrating for the moment on fund-raising, the festival is sponsoring a Female Protagonist Project. Playwrights are invited to submit works featuring female characters by May 1. Information: 206-860-2970 or www.maewestfest.org.

Also soliciting new works by May 1 is Theatre Schmeater. The company is sponsoring its third annual Northwest Playwrighting Competition. Details: www.schmeater.org/playcompetition_rules.html.
