A fresh wave of openings moves into town

The fall theater season gets into full swing this week with an avalanche of openings.

  • Perhaps with back-to-school in mind, Civic Light Opera offers the musical American history lesson of "1776," opening Friday at Building 47 in Magnuson Park. It sets to music the efforts of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson (who knew they could dance?) to persuade the Continental Congress to declare independence from England. Tickets $25-$35; seattlemus

  • The long-running "Sex in Seattle" series launches Episode 16 Friday night, and its first as a resident company of Richard Hugo House (1634 11th Ave.). The smart and sexy local hit explores the loves and lives of a group of Asian American gal pals in the Emerald City and promises fantasy-filled fun. Tickets $8-$14; sexinseattle.org. The company also launches on Sunday (also at Hugo House) the first of three readings of "Ixnay," by Paul Kikuchi. The play is a comedy about a usually polite Asian awaiting reincarnation who refuses to be sent back again as an Asian-American. Tickets $4-$6; ticketwindow

  • The 10th production of SketchFest, a festival of sketch comedy, launches its gala opening Wednesday at Theater Off Jackson (409 Seventh Ave. S.). The long-running event brings together locals such as Unexpected Productions and Pork-Filled Players with comic groups from Canada, New York, California and the Midwest. Tickets $15, $10 for repeat viewing; brownpapertickets.com.

  • New City Theater opens its new home, the Shoebox Performance Space (1404 18th Ave.), on Thursday with Wallace Shawn's "The Fever." Peter Crook performs the solo monologue that punctures and exploits the tortured guilt of the American liberal. Tickets $10-$15; brownpapertickets.com.
