Petition drive OK'd for countywide monorail
Activists pushing a proposal to consider building a King Countywide monorail system finally got the OK yesterday to begin collecting signatures to put the plan before voters.
The King County clerk's office had rejected the initial petition that Citizens for King County Monorail planned to use because it did not follow the proper form. The office granted the approval after the group made the necessary changes.
The group plans to begin gathering signatures at 6 a.m. this morning at the 114th Avenue Southeast and the SoutheastSixth Street park and ride lot in Bellevue.
It has until Sept. 29 to collect 45,000 valid signatures or it has to start over again. The County Council would decide whether to put the measure on the ballot in November or next year.
The initiative calls for creating a commission to come up with a plan for the monorail system. The commission would then bring its plan before voters in two years. King County would fund the planning with $6.4 million.
For more information, go to the committee's Web site at www.kingcountymonorail.org or call 206-860-4366.
