New group formed to promote monorail says voters support plan

A new group has been formed to help promote the expansion of Seattle's monorail, and it says voters are strongly behind the project.

Monorail Now! was formed in late April by a group that included three members of the board of the Elevated Transportation Co., which is completing a monorail extension plan.

The ETC hopes wants to put its monorail proposal before voters in November.

Harolynne Bobis, Cindi Laws and Tom Weeks have joined with 2nd Avenue Partners owners Keith Grinstein, Nick Hanauer and Mike Slade to form the group's steering committee.

Other committee members include retired businessman Peter Sherwin, who wrote the successful 2000 initiative that started the expansion planning.

The group commissioned a telephone poll of 600 likely voters early this month. Eighty percent of respondents support monorail expansion after hearing the pros and cons of a new system, with 19 percent opposed and 1 percent undecided. Told of the total cost, route and of the possible cost in new taxes, 66 percent favored the expansion, 31 percent opposed it and 3 percent were undecided. The poll had a 4 percent margin of error.

Sherwin's original group, Rise Above it All, also is gearing up for a campaign, but Laws said the larger organization was set up to take advantage of the other members' political and business connections, creating what Weeks called "as broad a base of support as possible."
