Eyman won't fight for I-776 enforcement

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

Tim Eyman said this week he won't go to court to enforce Initiative 776, which cuts vehicle taxes some motorists are paying. None of the government agencies involved seems inclined to stop collecting them unless ordered by a court to do so.

I-776, passed last week, repeals state laws that allow the motor vehicle excise tax levied by Sound Transit and a $15 local-option fee charged by Douglas, King, Pierce and Snohomish counties for road maintenance. Eyman is calling on Attorney General Christine Gregoire to enforce I-776.

Gregoire's office has no plans to step in. If Gregoire doesn't act, Eyman says he expects public backlash to fuel his latest initiative campaign, which would require a 75 percent supermajority for the Legislature and local councils and commissions to raise taxes.
