Monorail lead grows razor-thin
The monorail proposal's lead shrank to 329 votes in the latest vote tally released this afternoon -- 89,899 yeas to 89,570 nays.
|
That gives the Seattle ballot measure a narrow margin of 50.09 percent for to 49.91 percent against.
More than 4,000 absentee ballots remain to be counted, plus an unknown number of special ballots issued to voters who did not receive their absentee ballots in time and had to cast votes at polling places.
(Note: Inforrmation regarding the number of ballots yet to be counted has been corrected.)
"Yes" votes outnumbered the "nos" by more than 4 percentage points the day after the election, but the margin has shrunk with each subsequent tally of absentee ballots.
The next vote count will be announced at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, with a final, unofficial tally due to be released the following day.
Because the monorail plan was placed on the Nov. 5 ballot by petition, there will be no automatic recount. Pro- and anti-monorail forces could request a recount, but would have to pay the cost.
