Excellent cast helps 'The Lyon's Den' make its case

By MELANIE McFARLAND
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER TELEVISION CRITIC

Meet at: 10 p.m. at KING/5, starting Sept. 28.

The goods: Stars Rob Lowe, Matt Craven, Frances Fisher, David Krumholtz, Elizabeth Mitchell, James Pickens. Jr.

Ideal mate is: Missing Rob Lowe on "The West Wing" and the glory days of "L.A. Law."

First impression: John "Jack" Turner (Lowe) enjoys making a difference by working in a small pro-bono law clinic in Washington, D.C. When the sponsoring law firm of Lyon, LaCrosse and Levine offer him the position of managing partner, his best friend and co-worker, George Riley (Craven), urges him to take the job. If he didn't, the clinic would shut down. The reason Jack is reluctant is because the law firm is a hotbed of backstabbers and schemers, a few of whom know the place is hiding some very dark secrets.

Promising? This is the kind of show that'll live or die on the strength of its characters and, luckily, they all flex their muscles in the pilot. Most viewers who tune in will be doing so to see Lowe (who doubles as the show's executive producer), but the fierce ensemble, including a couple of car crashes like recovering alcoholic Ariel Saxon (Mitchell) and Jeff Fineman (Krumholtz), the paralegal pining away for her are surprise treats. What really makes this show are the villains, especially Brit Hanley (Fisher), a vixenish redhead assistant who sweetly pours poison in the ears of the rising attorney she aids. In the hands of this able cast, "The Lyon's Den" purrs. The intrigue spun by the end of the first episode primes you for the next.
