Animator is a master of retro chic as her doe-eyed girls enliven cliches
Seonna Hong has a thriving career as an animator in Los Angeles. She worked on the "Powerpuff Girls" and is a principal on "My Life as a Teenage Robot." Like her husband, fellow animator Tim Biskup, her move into the art world has been decisive.
In the past century, Nickelodeon animators would be tempted to minimize their commercial success if they hoped to impress cultural elites. Today, working in the belly of the beast is no bar to aesthetic advancement. In fact, it might give you a leg up if you know how to use it, which Hong does.
She's a master of retro chic. In her current series of small paintings on paper, doe-eyed girls in opaque watercolor (gouache) bask in their power to animate cliches. "Silver Lining" is just that, a girl painting a silver lining around a cloud. "Loose Lips" places the girls at a pond, their whispering sinking toy ships, paper sails dipping into shallow water.
"Rose Colored Glasses" glows, while the same scene in "A Little Bluer" makes fun of a dour spirit. How sad can you be with the Chi Chi Cafe behind you?
At Roq la Rue Gallery, 2316 Second Ave., through Nov. 31. Hours: Tuesdays-Fridays, 2-6 p.m. Saturdays, 1-5 p.m.
