Titzer peoples his world with wonderfully wacky figures

Their ears stick out, their teeth look false. They seem quizzical, astounded, sad, goofy and demonic. Definitely offbeat and bizarre; dark but captivating. Faces only a mother could love.

Yet, here's Evansville, Ind.-based Kevin Titzer, with his first Northwest show almost sold out. His wacky wood and pounded tin figures remind you of sideshow freaks, backwoods folk, deadened factory workers and weird events. Who else would make a woodpecker digging holes in a man's head? Or a scalp growing sharpened pencils as if one stuck behind an ear rooted and multiplied?

Like an anthropologist, Titzer captures an essence of a person or type. One man flashes a fly strip, proud as a hunter with a rack. Another's seemingly elastic arm aims to shoot an apple perched on his head. A guy garbed in a rocket-covered pajama suit stands atop a pedestal reminiscent of those toy figures that flop over when you press the base. "Teeth or Eye" holds out his false teeth and eyeball as if offering a gift. Clearly, Titzer is a young artist to watch.

Kevin Titzer: Busts, Figurines and Statuette. Through May 29 at Garde Rail Gallery, 4860 Rainier Avenue S., 206-721-0107, www.garde-rail.com. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday: 11 a.m.--5 p.m.
